Dr. Ingo Friedrich MdEP, Gunzenhausen (Mittelfranken), ist der erste deutsche Träger des Europäischen Mittelstandspreises/European SME Award. Am 28. Februar 2007 erhielt er die Auszeichnung in der Kontinentalstufe im Rahmen einer Festveranstaltung in der Münchner Residenz. Die Laudatio hielt Bundesminister Michael Glos in seiner Funktion als Vorsitzender des Europäischen Rates der Wirtschaftsminister.

Vergeben wurde der Preis durch die UNION MITTELSTÄNDISCHER UNTERNEHMEN e.V. - UMU, München, und ihren Europäischen Dachverband European Union of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (EUSME), Brüssel. Zusammen mit den Unterstützerverbänden (s. u.) stehen damit ca. 1,3 Millionen Unternehmen mit mehr als 5 Millionen Mitarbeitern hinter der Auszeichnung.

200 Ehrengäste aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft kamen, um Ingo Friedrich die Reverenz zu erweisen, u. a. die Bundestagsabgeordneten Laurenz Meyer und Christine Scheel, Landtagsabgeordnete, Bettina Adenauer, Enkelin des ersten deutschen Bundeskanzlers, Unternehmer aus Griechenland, England, Österreich und der Schweiz, aus Deutschland z.B. INA-Chefin Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler, Prof. Roland Berger, Fred Kogel. 

Der Europäische Elite-Mittelstandspreis in der Kontinentalstufe ist mit EURO 6.000,- dotiert, die Ingo Friedrich an die Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg spendete. Damit sollen Forschungsaufträge gefördert werden, die das Ziel haben, die Gründung mittelständischer Unternehmen zu erleichtern und damit die Selbständigenquote in Deutschland zu erhöhen.

Dr. Ingo Friedrich ist langjähriges Mitglied des Präsidiums des Europaparlamentes, wie auch der Europäischen Volkspartei. Der gelernte Volkswirt gehört seit 1979 dem Europaparlament an und war seitdem besonders mit Wirtschafts- und Währungsfragen betraut. Er hat in dieser Funktion wesentlichen Anteil am Zustandekommen des europäischen Binnenmarktes, von dem durch ihre Exporte insbesondere die deutsche Wirtschaft und der deutsche Mittelstand profitieren. Ein Meilenstein seiner Politik war, trotz vieler Widerstände, die Durchsetzung der Unabhängigkeit der Europäischen Zentralbank von den begehrlichen Regierungen der Mitgliedsstaaten - u. a. wollte der damalige Finanzminister Lafontaine die Geldpolitik der EZB der politischen Kontrolle unterwerfen. Die nahezu DM-gleiche Stabilität des Euro ist damit auch Verdienst Ingo Friedrichs.

Friedrich ist einer der Väter der europäischen Mittelstandsvertretung. Obwohl die kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen in der Europäischen Union über 50% des Bruttoinlandsproduktes erwirtschaften und für mehr als zwei Drittel der Arbeitsplätze sorgen, war eine Interessenver­tretung in Brüssel nur in Ansätzen vorhanden - Großunternehmen verfügten dagegen über eine gut ausgebaute Lobby. Ingo Friedrich sah es als besondere Aufgabe an, geeignete Rahmenbeding­ungen für Klein- und Mittelbetriebe zu schaffen und hat sich in einer Reihe europäischer Mittelstandsorganisationen engagiert, u. a. war er von 1984 bis 1990 Präsident der Europäischen Mittelstands-Union (EMSU) und gab den Anstoß zur Gründung der Europäischen Wirtschafts- und Mittelstandsvereinigung.

Die bisherigen Preisträger des European Elite SME Award in der Globalstufe sind der 42. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten Bill Clinton und der frühere chinesische Ministerpräsident Zhu Rongji.

Dr. Ingo Friedrich MEP, Gunzenhausen (Middle Franconia), is the first German recipient of the European SME Award. On February 28, 2007 he received the award in the continental stage as part of a festive event in the Munich Residence. The laudation was given by Federal Minister Michael Glos in his role as Chairman of the European Council of Economic Ministers.

The European Elite SME Prize at the continental level is endowed with EUR 6,000, which Ingo Friedrich donated to the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. The aim is to fund research contracts with the aim of making it easier for medium-sized companies to be set up and thus increasing the self-employment rate in Germany.

Dr. Ingo Friedrich has been a member of the Presidium of the European Parliament for many years, as well as of the European People's Party. The trained economist has been a member of the European Parliament since 1979 and has since been particularly entrusted with economic and currency issues. In this function, he played a key role in the creation of the European internal market, from which the German economy and German SMEs in particular benefit through their exports. A milestone in his policy was, despite much resistance, the enforcement of the independence of the European Central Bank from the covetous governments of the member states - among others. the then Finance Minister Lafontaine wanted to subject the ECB's monetary policy to political control. The almost DM-equal stability of the euro is also thanks to Ingo Friedrich.

Friedrich is one of the fathers of the European SME representation. Although the small and medium-sized enterprises in the European Union generate over 50% of the gross domestic product and provide more than two thirds of the jobs, there was only a rudimentary representation of interests in Brussels - large companies, on the other hand, had a well-developed lobby. Ingo Friedrich saw it as a special task to create suitable framework conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises and was involved in a number of European medium-sized companies, including.
